Zu Beginn des Romans wird die Schlacht von Maxia geschildert und das bedrohliche Auftreten der Ferengi am Beginn von Raumschiff Enterprise: Das nächste Jahrhundert als Desinformationsstrategie erklärt, weil sie die geldlose Gesellschaft der Föderation für verrückt hielten. Zek ordnete daher eine militärische Aufrüstung an und ließ Gerüchte verbreiten, damit man am Tag des Ersten Kontakts aus einer Position der Stärke auftreten könne.
