Als Veröffentlichungsdatum wird der 15. Oktober 1979 genannt. Es wurde jedoch erst nach der Premiere von Star Trek: Der Film am 7. Dezember 1979 veröffentlicht. Das Playboy-Magazin kündigte die Veröffentlichung für Januar 1980 an (S. 310).

Sackett erhielt den Auftrag, als Co-Autorin an dem Buch mitzuarbeiten, nachdem sie bereits an The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture mitgearbeitet hatte. Star Trek Speaks war jedoch leichter zu schreiben und wurde so zuerst veröffentlicht. (Return to Tomorrow - The Filming of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, S. 417)
